The Orielles – You are Eating a Part of Yourself / To Undo the World Itself

Manchester trio The Orielles release a double single, “You are Eating a Part of Yourself” and “To Undo the World Itself”, from their fourth album “Only You Left”, out March 13th via Heavenly Recordings. The album was recorded in Hydra and Hamburg during summer 2024, marking their return to a three-piece lineup after experimenting with expanded arrangements on 2022’s “Tableau”.

“You are Eating a Part of Yourself” started as a durational guitar loop from improvisations recorded in Henry Wade’s bedroom. The title comes from a 1996 video artwork that captures darkness from the original recording, years later. Both tracks build gradually, submerging listeners in glitch-laden feedback and noise as harmonic progressions rise. There’s bittersweetness throughout, a sense of time passing.

“To Undo the World Itself” features reverb-drenched vocal melodies. The band describes it as a song of rebirth and reversal, or of outstanding finality, depending on your impression. They loved playing it in various live rooms during writing and recording, testing it against thunderstorms and peaceful sunsets.

The double single video, directed by Neelam Khan Vela, spans both tracks. Vela has collaborated with The Orielles for nearly a decade, creating an intuitive creative process. The band filmed with Lewis and Giulia in Manchester, with Vela letting the music’s emotional pull guide the edit.

“Only You Left” consolidates the bold experimentation of “Tableau” with the stripped-back, song-led approach of their 2018 debut “Silver Dollar Moment”. Guitarist Henry Wade describes it as a seven-year cycle coming full circle. Singer/bassist Esmé Hand-Halford and drummer Sidonie Hand-Halford complete the trio.

The album began in May 2023, and between tours, they recorded practice sessions on their phones, analysing every snippet in detail. Unlike “Tableau’s” semi-improvisational studio process, “Only You Left” was meticulously crafted through intense writing sessions from May 2023 to summer 2024.

Producer and engineer Joel Anthony Patchett, who Esmé calls the honorary fourth member, has worked with them since “Silver Dollar Moment”. Album artwork features a specially commissioned three-panel collage by Louie Morris, built as a sculptural object photographed to look like a modernised replica of 14th-century originals, designed to wear and decay over time.
